Can All the Flowers Talk?

"Can all the flowers talk?"
"As well as you can," said the Tiger-Lily,
"and a good deal louder."

~Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll

Most people associate roses with love,
but did you know that flowers have been used as a language of their own for centuries?
Anyone wanting to send a secret message could simply make a posy of the right flowers...
a white camellia to say "You're adorable,"
a purple hyacinth to tell someone you're sorry.
The Language of Flowers

Flowers have also been a staple of fashion as long as women have loved beauty.
Alberta Ferretti's Spring 2014 Runway designs showcased florals,
along with beautifully feminine ruffles and bright colors.

"Do you think amethysts can be the souls of good violets?"

Anne of Green Gables was a little disappointed to find that real diamonds were not the deep, velvety purple she'd always imagined...and I think I can sympathize. February's birthstone, amethyst, has always been one of my favorite gems.

A variety of quartz that ranges from light pinkish-violet to deep purple, amethyst has been treasured since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Greeks and Romans even believed that the stone could prevent drunkenness! In fact, the word "amethyst" comes from the ancient Greek a-methustos, or "not intoxicated."

The Pantone Color Institute obviously shares the world's love of amethyst; they named a rosy purple called "Radiant Orchid" the color of the year for 2014. According to their press release, this lovely hue creates a "healthy glow" and boosts the energy of anyone who wears it.

At D's Keepsakes, we think purple is simply beautiful.
We love it in rings, bracelets, necklaces, scarves...
and we know you will too!

Chevron, Chevron Everywhere!

Chevron, or the sophisticated zigzag pattern that is showing up everywhere in the fashion world from jewelry to scarves to hats and skirts, goes back to at least 1800 B.C.! Archaeologists have found it engraved on pottery from the palace of Knossos, in Crete.

The chevron was popularized in the world of heraldry. If you look back far enough, you might even find that your family's coat of arms was emblazoned with a chevron! England's Princess Kate has one on hers, which represents her family and heritage.

Surely most of us are familiar with the use of the chevron in military insignia. From sci-fi stripes on Star Trek uniforms to real live sergeants, we've all seen the design on our heroes.

Even Norway's curling team (notorious for their fun and funky fashion style) plan to sport the chevron in the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi!

But if you're looking for something a little closer to home, you can find wearable chevrons at D's Keepsakes. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, scarves...we have a little of everything.
